1John 4:7-11
(7) Beloved let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. (8) He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.(9) In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. (10) In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be a propitiation for our sins. (11) Beloved if God so loved us, we ought to love one another.
The love we are to love with is His love, not the world’s love, it is easy to love those who treat us good, and do what we want and expect of them. It is a little different than loving our enemies and those who despise us or do us wrong. But if you look in Matthew, 5:43-46 Jesus tells us to love our enemies and bless those who curse us. We know that Jesus walked in this kind of love. The kind of love that is described in 1 Corinthians 13. It tells us that we can do many wonderful things such as prophecy, give to the poor, and have the faith to move mountains but don’t have love it profits us nothing. In verses 4-7 God tells us what love is and is not, so we can put them it in two categories like the following:
Love is kind, Love is not envy
Love thinks no evil, Love does not parade itself
Love is longsuffering, Love is not puffed up
Love rejoices in the truth, Love does not behave rudely
Bears all things Love does not seek its own
Believes all things Love is not provoked
Hopes all things Love does not rejoice in iniquity.
Endures all things.
The truth of the matter folks is we can only truly love this way through Christ living in us, look at 1 John 4: 14-16. These verses connect our relationship with the Son of God, if we confess that Jesus is the Son of God and He was sent as Savior then He abides in us. So as Christians, we know He lives in our spirit man, therefore we know we can love the way God wants us to love.
Using this definition we can began to check ourselves to determine if we are walking in the love that God has called us to walk in.
