Romans chapter eight focuses on walking by the Spirit. God wants us to be spiritually minded- thinking or minding the things of God rather than the things of the world. God knows we have to be concerned with the things in this life such as working, taking care of our families, and paying our bills. But these things including worldly pleasures should be second in our lives, with our focus on spiritual matters such as getting to know our Heavenly Father and His Son better, living for God and being a witness of their love.
In Romans 8:1-8
1) There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. 2) For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made us free from the law of sin and death. 3) For the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh 4) that the righteousness requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. 5) For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. 6) For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7) Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. 8.) So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
Now look at Colossians 1:27,
To them God willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.
Being in Christ and Christ in you are two different things. Christ in you happens at the new birth when we become born again. Being in Christ is our fellowship with Him, in other words, walking by the Spirit, which is listening to His voice and obeying it. It tells us in I Peter 1:3
Having been born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible through the Word of God, which lives and abides forever
Now look at 1 John 3:9
Whoever has been born of God does not sin for His seed remains in him, and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God.
Wow, does that mean we don’t sin anymore when we become born of God? No! We must understand that it is in the spirit that we cannot sin. We still can sin in our minds against God, so that is why we have to renew our minds and put on the mind of Christ.
Walking by the Spirit simply means living for God, through obedience to His written Word (the Bible) or His personal voice to us. We allow God’s Word to be louder than what the world has to say to us.
