The Word of God is our instruction for how to live and how to deal with money and possessions and is found throughout the Bible. Many people will tell you that money is evil, but that is not what the Word says about it. It is not money of itself that is evil but the love of money. Look at 1Timothy 6:6-10
6) Now godliness with contentment is great gain. 7) For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. 8.) And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content. 9) But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. 10) For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
From these verses we see that God is talking about striving to be rich, to gain possessions, and that it brings destruction and sorrow when we put these things above seeking God. He wants us to be aware of where we allow money and possessions to take place in our lives. Are we putting them above God?
We can answer this question from different points of view - from not having enough or having too much. Not having enough money to pay your bills can be very stressful and can take up a lot of one’s energy and time trying to figure ways on getting or making more money. On the other hand, having so much money one barely thinks about God because they are busy spending it, or thinking about how to make more or how to keep it. Either way money is the focus of one’s energy and not God.
Matthew 6:33
But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be added to you.
What things will be added to us, to understand what Jesus is talking about., look in the above verses starting with verse 24.
Matthew 6:24-34
24) No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. 25) Therefore, I say unto you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? 26) Look at the birds of the air, for they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. 27) Are you not more value than they? Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature? 28) So why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; 29) and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30) Now if God so clothes the grass of the field , which today is and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will He not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31) Therefore, do not worry saying, What shall we eat, or What shall we drink, or What shall we wear? 32) For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33) But seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be added to you. 34) Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.
By seeking God and his righteousness we will have our needs met.
In order to understand it, what it means to seek God’s kingdom we need to know what seek and kingdom refers to in this verse. Doing a word study in the Greek will give us a better understanding . The word “seek” in Greek is zete͞o, which means to look for, seek out, to try to obtain, to possess, or to strive for. The word “kingdom” in the Greek refers to kingship or royal rule. So in light of this we must strive to obtain the royal rule of God. And we find this through His Word, the Bible. When we seek out to do His will all our needs will be met.
