Intercessory prayer
Pray or prayer used in the Bible can have one of several definitions. Today, our focus targets the meaning intercede or intervene. We can find this usage of the word throughout the Old Testament, when men of God prayed or interceded for the children of God when they had turned his back on them.
The word intercede defined in the dictionary means to plead in behalf of one in trouble, or to meditate. And the word intervene means to come between disputing people, groups, etc, or to occur incidentally as to modify. Remember, the context of the verse will give us a clue to how it is used; we will now look at how Nehemiah interceded for the children of Israel.
In the first chapter of Nehemiah we see him asking about those who survived the captivity of Babylon. In reply, he found the children of God in distress and the wall of Jerusalem broke down. He weeps and cries out to God and intercedes for them 1:5-11. We see in chapter two that God grants favor to Nehemiah from the king to go and rebuild the wall. Chapters three through six gives an account of the building of the wall and the opposition which comes against the children of Israel. But it also shows how Nehemiah continues to intercede for them. In chapter six we see the wall of Jerusalem completed regardless of the great opposition that came against it and Nehemiah. This account really shows how intercession is made and how God intervenes because of it.
Let’s look at some scripture in the New Testament where intercessory prayer was used for the believers. In Acts chapter 12 we see intercession going up to God for Peter while he was in prison. The church was under prosecution at the time and believers were being killed, through King Herod’s command. He found that this pleased the Jews and so he had Peter seized and put in jail (1-4). In verse 5, it says that prayer was offered up to God for him continually by the church. We see in the following verses how God intervenes and Peter is freed from prison.
We see in the above accounts, prayer releases God’s power to intervene in a situation. God wants to move on behalf of His children, but He is needs our permission to do so. Think about what would have happened if intercession for these situations were not given. We see throughout the Word, how God intervenes on behalf of people’s prayer and intercession.
The Holy Spirit also intercedes for us as we pray; Romans 8:26-28
Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God. And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God and are the called according to His purpose.
At times we may not know what to pray for or how to pray but the Spirit gives intercession for us to know the plan of God. Have you ever had a heavy heart or an uneasy feeling about someone or something but not sure what- but you prayed until these lifted and you felt at peace again?
